The number of people entering the May 8 school board races has begun to increase in some area school districts as one week remains before the election filing deadline. Pilot Point officials have reported incumbents in places 3 and 4 have both drawn contenders. Incumbent Steve Kenney and sales manager Pat Burns have filed to run for Place 3, and incumbent Lezlie MacElroy and sub contract administrator Micky Nortman have filed to run for Place 4. Ponder school officials said deputy constable Wayne Bengston and home builder Cory Anthony have filed to run for Place 7, a position currently held by Eric Brooks who will be ineligible to run in the May election because he's moved out of the district. Chris Lyles, who's served as a trustee since 2002, has filed to seek a third term in Place 6 on the Ponder School Board. In the wake of Sanger Board President Sam Burrus announcing that he will not seek another term, local residents, Ken Scribner and Donna Johnson, have applied for his Place 4 seat. Cristy Koonce, Place 5 incumbent, has filed for re-election and currently remains unopposed. Officials in the Denton, Aubrey, Krum and Lake Dallas districts have all reported that incumbents in their districts have filed for re-election but have yet to have someone file to contest them in school board elections. Incumbents currently unopposed include Denton trustees Glenna Harris, Place 3, Mia Price, Place 4, and Charles Stafford, Place, 5;Aubrey board members Marcus Pierce, Place 4 and Jim Milacek, Place 5; Krum at-large school board members, Donna Hooper and Doug Willis; and Lake Dallas trustees Chad Thiessen, Place 3 and Scotty Baird, Place 4. In Argyle, two at-large seats are on the ballot, and so far, incumbent Brenda Alexander is the only person who has filed to run. In addition to Alexander's seat, Steven Moore's seat is also up for election this year. Filing to run in area school board races ends for most districts March 8. The entry "More enter for school board races as filing deadline approaches" has no entry tags. Candidates are out making their last-minute pleas to voters today, and tomorrow they'll watch for the results. The primary election is finally upon us. In Texas, the primaries are open, meaning that voters are not registered with a particular party. You can't vote in both Democratic and Republican, but you can choose whichever one you prefer, as long as you don't try to change during the same voting year. |
