Unsettled weather still in the forecast today for the Denton area. Showers and a few thunderstorms moved through the area early this morning. There were a couple of unconfirmed reports of very small hail with this activity, but most of that was to our south. The afternoon forecast continues to give me a headache. My gut feeling is that the majority of severe thunderstorms will be south of the Denton area later today. A warm front continues to surge northward into central Texas as is bringing rich Gulf moisture with it. A dryline will begin to sharpen up in west Texas as the day progresses and begin to move toward north Texas. The tornadic potential will be greatest at the intersection of these 2 features. However, upperlevel wind shear is very impressive and has the capability of feeding storms that form and lending to the development of supercells. With that in mind any storm that shows vigorous growth and a decent life span will have the ability to go severe. Large hail and isolated tornadoes will be a distinct possibility with these storms. Some other parameters I've been looking at this morning also indicate that showers and thunderstorms will be very efficient rain producers, so some heavy rain is quite possible late this afternoon into tonight. With all that said, it is still very hard to pin down the areas that will be affected the most by this storm system. Cool season severe weather outbreaks rank up there near the top in forecast difficulty. Keep your weather radios handy and keep an eye on the radar this afternoon and tonight. Don't get caught by surprise. I will try to provide updates as necessary.
