SUN: Severe weather may threaten the Denton area on Monday...

Unsettled weather including the possibility of severe thunderstorms is expected across the Denton area over the next 36 hours. A potent upper level storm system located in western Arizona is on the move this evening and will be in our region on Monday.

Ahead of this system we will see south winds pick up overnight tonight and begin to transport rich moisture into the area from the Gulf. At the onset, moisture will be lifted up over the stable air mass we have in place currently. This combined with the upper level energy associated with the approaching storm system will spawn showers and thunderstorms early Monday. Some of the stronger storms will have the capability of producing some hail.

The difficulty with Monday afternoon's forecast is whether or not storms will eventually become surface based and not elevated in nature as the storms early in the day will be. A dryline approaching from the west will provide a focus for more organized surfaced based storms to form. However, an inhibiting factor for strong storm formation may be the fact that the early day activity will not allow our atmosphere to destabilize enough to realize its full severe potential. This will be the item to watch during the day on Monday. Should we manage to see some sunshine and a bit of decent warming the potential for tornadic supercell thunderstorms will increase.

At any rate you should be alert for rapidly changing weather conditions with the potential for severe thunderstorms throughout the day on Monday.

I should be able to provide an early update tomorrow morning with the latest details and trends. Keep your weather radios handy.
