Preliminary Stats on Yesterday's Severe Weather Outbreak...

Severe storms began just 1 county to our east shortly after lunch time on Tuesday. There were 2 reports of 3/4" hail in Collin County, and to our southeast in Dallas County golf ball sized hail was reported about 6 miles east of downtown Dallas. The storm system responsible for this was just getting started. We were lucky here.

As of this posting the number of deaths reported across the mid-southern sections of the U.S. was estimated at 47. Data from the National Weather Service shows that in the last 3 years for the month of February the average deaths due to tornadoes is 1.

As of this posting the number of tornadoes reported yesterday is 67. Remember that is a preliminary count and will probably change as sometimes the same tornado is reported more than once. Again data from the National Weather Service shows that in the last 3 years for the month of February the average number of tornadoes reported is 25.

No doubt that yesterday's outbreak will go down in history. It also drives home the point of why you need a NOAA weather radio as the majority of the deaths occurred after dark. Minutes save lives, so any amount of warning you get when a dangerous storm is headed in your directions is extremely important!
