Possible wintry precip Thursday night into Friday...

Cold start to the day and continued cold weather for the next couple of days. Another cold front will move into the region late tonight and begin filtering a reinforcing shot of colder air into the area.

There is a pretty potent storm system sitting off the west coast at this time. It’s not going any where fast for a day or two. However, as it sits and spins off the California coast it will spit out bits of upper-level energy that will move across north Texas. One of these upper-level disturbances will move into our area Thursday night into Friday. This will bring some moisture in from the Pacific Ocean and a bit of Gulf moisture too. This moisture will be pulled up over the airmass left in place by the cold front. In weather terms this is known as overrunning. In scenarios like this with cold air at the surface and moisture on top of it we will see some precipitation fall in the area. This set up could bring us some freezing rain and sleet from Thursday night into Friday morning. The amount that falls will depend on just how much moisture can be pulled up and over our cold air at the ground. At this time I would give the Denton area a 30% chance of seeing sleet and freezing rain Friday morning. Again I remind you that winter forecast like this are very tricky and depend on a lot of variables coming together with just the right timing. As always I will tweak the forecast as this event draws near.

Meanwhile radar echoes are showing up in west and central Texas as a spike of upper-level energy moves just to our south today. Unsettled weather will continue as noted above, but by the weekend into the early part of next week we will see a nice warming trend with temperatures making it into the 60s on Sunday and approach the 70 degree mark on Monday.
