Dean Cat 5 Hits Yucatan

Comment received from: "Robert"

Hurricane Dean made landfall on the Yucatan near the cruise ship port of Costa Maya around 3:30 am as a category 5 hurricane. Landfalling category 5 storms are a rare occurrence. The last time that the U.S. had a cat 5 make landfall was hurricane Andrew in 1992. Meanwhile Dean continues across the Yucatan peninsula and at this time is a category 3 (111-130mph) and will probably weaken a bit, but will reemerge into the Bay of Campeche later this afternoon. He is expected to re-intensify once back over warm water. Second landfall will occur on the southern Mexican coast.

There is another area of interest in the tropics to be watched which is east of the Bahamas. Currently there is no storm, but conditions are favorable and computer models turn it into a tropical storm in the next 36 hours. I’ll keep an eye on it and let you know what happens in case anyone is headed out that way for vacation.

Hot, muggy and breezy conditions will continue today and for the next few days in our area. A frontal system will approach the Red River area, but probably won’t have enough uummfph to make it much further south to affect our weather.
